The Swedish Defence University is a specialised higher education institution that conducts research and trains officers and students in the fields of defence, crisis management and security. We offer programmes at all academic levels, have around 2,000 students and approximately 550 staff members. We are based in Karlstad and Stockholm.

 

As well as training officers at all levels, we also offer exciting and interesting courses in our six subject areas: political science, leadership and command and Control, military history, Systems science for defence and security, operational and international law, and war studies – courses which are open to everyone. 

 

Academic research at the Swedish Defence University is relatively recent in relation to the institution’s 200-year history. It is particularly over the last ten years that the process of academic development has really gained momentum. We have around 20 professors, an equal number of senior lecturers, and some thirty doctoral students and researchers and lecturers who have completed their doctorates. Our research is largely applied, which means there is a particularly close link between research and societal benefit.
