The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. We offer a unique academic environment where military and civilian researchers, teachers and students interact. We educate and train top-level executives, experts, and researchers for the task of analyzing and managing current and future crises, security issues and conflicts. The university educates all military officers in the Swedish armed forces and leads the academic progression of the military profession. We conduct research in the areas of Law with a focus on International and Operational Law, Leadership and Command & Control, Military History, Political Science, Systems Science for Defence and Security and War Studies.

The Department of Systems Science for Defence and Security conducts research and education at the intersection of social sciences and engineering. The subject is interdisciplinary and studies how a combination of social and technical components affect the systems used for the defence and security of society. The subject's employees primarily teach within the Officer Programme, the Master's Programme in Defence and Security Systems Development, and the Higher Officer Programme. They also contribute by provided teaching and expertise in other civilian and military education programmes, including contract education commissioned by both governmental and private parties. Research is either financed by grants or commissioned by contract.

The employment is placed at Department of Systems Science for Defence and Security in Stockholm.

Do you want to research and teach at the intersection of technology, society and defense? We are looking for you who have recently completed your PhD and who have experience in the cyber defense field. We offer an attractive merit-based position, in a unique environment, where you will have at least 50% of your working time for your own research. The position also includes teaching, supervision and pedagogical development work.

Duties

The position is an appointment pertaining to research, of at least 50%, in the subject of System Science for Defence and Security. The job responsibilities for this position are focused on cyber defence. In cyber defence we include military organizations, functions of society as well as commercial companies and citizens.

In addition, the position also includes course responsibility, work with examinations and administrative tasks. Research, teaching and supervision take place within both civilian and military education programs.

It is included in the position to follow developments within the subject area, both nationally and internationally, and social developments in general that are important to the employment. As an Associate Senior Lecturer, you share knowledge and contribute to the Swedish Defence University's professional development, collegial working methods and social community.

General requirements

A teacher at the Swedish Defence University should complete training in higher education teaching, before or at the latest two years after the initiation of employment begun.

The position is open to international applicants, but the applicant must have the ability to teach in both Swedish and English before employment or no later than two years after employment begins.

Qualifications Required

Applicants who have obtained a PhD degree or achieved the equivalent competence in five years or less prior to the end of the application period will be given priority. Also those who have obtained authorization previously can be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances. It may be assessed in the individual case whether a foreign degree can be considered equivalent to a Swedish degree.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment criteria for the appointment of an Associate Senior Lecturer are the degree of skill required for the position. 

The pedagogical and scientific skill shall be documented so that the quality can be assessed.

It is of utmost importance that the applicant has:

  • Documented ability for high-quality independent research within cyber defence that has been demonstrated through publication in relevant channels.
  • Documented ability for teaching expertise demonstrated through teaching and the planning and implementation of education at a higher education institution.

Additional assessment criteria:

  • Experience of sociotechnical defence research or from work within the defence sector.
  • Experience in national and international academic collaborations in research projects.
  • Experience in applying for external research funding.

About the position

The position can be held for a maximum of four years and includes a minimum of 50 % research. An Associate Senior Lecturer can apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer. If the Associate Senior Lecturer is deemed suitable and fulfills the criteria for promotion he/she shall be promoted to and employed as Senior Lecturer. Such employment means permanent employment.
