The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. We offer a unique academic environment where military and civilian researchers, teachers and students interact. War Studies is a social science whose central object of study is war and the use of force. The discipline contains research on how military capability is created, led, organized, maintained over time and comes into effect in operations, in wars, conflicts and crises. War Studies also includes social and ethical aspects as well as critical perspectives in relation to war and warfare. The discipline has both a general theoretical and knowledge-based dimension, as well as a practical and applied dimension linked primarily to the education of officers. The Swedish Defence University is the only university in Sweden where the discipline is taught.

The department of War Studies and Military History (IKVM) is now looking for a research assistant who can support a research project up to and including December 31 2023.

Description

The Department of War Studies and Military History is looking for a research assistant to support research within the subject Russian warfare.

Tasks

You will work with research on Russian warfare. It includes research, support for research, application for research funding, organization and implementation of the department's research activities in the field.

Who are you?

You hold a Masters degree in a relevant field.  You have excellent command of English and a professional level ability to express yourself in English both verbally and in writing.

It is advantageous that the applicant has:

  • Documented research credentials that show you have research knowledge in the field of Russian warfare.
  • Documented scientific skill demonstrated by ability to publish in "peer-reviewed" journals and publishers.
  • Completed or nearly completed dissertation.
  • Other publications in the field of Russian warfare.
  • Knowledge of Russian.
  • An officer background or other relevant experience from the defense or security sector.

To be considered for the position, you must be motivated, structured and communicative and take initiative and start new tasks. We expect you to actively participate in research and collaborate with others.

Employment

The position is a full-time, fixed-term position until 31 December 2023. Starting date as soon as possible or as otherwise agreed upon.

Employment at the Swedish Defence University may involve a security clearance for placement in a
security class, which means a security interview and record check with the Security Police.

The Swedish Defence University has a war time organization, which means that you must be prepared to be wartime posted at the Swedish Defence University if you are a Swedish citizen. If you already got a wartime posting in, for example, the Swedish Armed Forces and your skills are needed in the Swedish Defence University’s war time organization, a negotiation will take place between the relevant authority and the Swedish Defence University about where you will be posted. If you are not a Swedish citizen, the duty of service (general national service) applies.
