The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. War Studies is a social science whose central object of study is war and the use of force. The discipline contains research on how military capability is created, led, organized, maintained over time and comes into effect in operations, in wars, conflicts and crises. War Studies also includes social and ethical aspects as well as critical perspectives in relation to war and warfare. The discipline has both a general theoretical and knowledge-based dimension, as well as a practical and applied dimension linked primarily to the education of officers. The Swedish Defence University is the only university in Sweden where the discipline is taught.
The Department of War Studies and Military History at the Swedish Defence Unversity (SEDU) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in War Studies with specialization in cyber war.

The PhD programme consists of four years of full-time studies (240 ECTS credits). The central task is to write a doctoral thesis in War Studies under supervision (165 ECTS credits), but coursework (75 ECTS credits) is also part of the programme. Some courses are obligatory, while others are elective. The positions are fully funded throughout the four years. The positions may include teaching and other departmental duties up to 20% of full time, resulting in the extension of the employment period for a corresponding length of time (to a maximum of five years in total).
The position includes research within the research area of cyber war broadly understood. It can, for example, include questions about cyber as a means in war and warfare, as well as questions about the consequences of digitalization for defence and security.

The doctoral student position is a full-time (100 %), temporary position according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance. The position is placed at the Department of War Studies and Military History (IKVM).
The salary for doctoral students at the Swedish Defence University follows a specific structure, with a current starting salary of SEK 27 200/month. Exceptions are made for Swedish officers who are placed with the same basic salary they have in the Armed Forces. Swedish officers who are already employed at the Swedish Defence University retain the basic salary they have at the Swedish Defense University. In addition, doctoral students will also have access to a research budget of 30 000 per year to cover costs for travel, literature and other research related cost.
