The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. We offer a unique academic environment where military and civilian researchers, teachers and students interact. We educate and train top-level executives, experts, and researchers for the task of analyzing and managing current and future crises, security issues and conflicts. The university educates all military officers in the Swedish armed forces and leads the academic progression of the military profession. War Studies is the study of war, warfare and the use of military power. Research within war studies focuses on the nature of war, the utility of military means, the modus operandi of military organisations, and how military force is created, led, organised, and utilised in various types of operations (conventional and non-conventional). War Studies also includes the inner dynamics of military organisations, the officer profession, civil-military relations, total defence, how victory or defeat in battle, campaigns and wars are explained as well as issues relating to gender, peace and security. The position is full-time and will be based at the Strategy section (StratA), Department of Security, Strategy and Leadership (ISSL) in Stockholm.
The department is the home of five disciplines: International Law; Leadership under Stressful Conditions; War Studies with a focus on military strategy; as well as Political Science with a special focus on security policy, crisis management and international cooperation.
Research at the Strategic Section is especially focused on questions on how to use, create, and control armed forces, including issues of deterrence, the interaction between political goals and military means, civil-military relations, gender, war, and defence planning. Teaching includes, for example, courses on the use of military force, defence planning, civil-military relations and strategy issues in northern Europe.
Professional duties
The position involves research, teaching, (incl. supervision), as well as administration.
Qualifications
A person who has proven teaching proficiency and has obtained a PhD, or has equivalent scholarly expertise or similar professional expertise relevant to the particular field and the responsibilities and tasks included in the position, has the qualifications for appointment as a senior lecturer.
If the applicant holds a foreign degree, an assessment will be made regarding its equivalence to a Swedish degree.
Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria for appointment as a senior lecturer shall be the degree of the expertise required as a qualification for employment. As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research skills.
Special, and equal, emphasis will be placed on the following assessment criteria:
Experience as a military officer, or other relevant experience from the defense and security sector is considered a merit.
Applicants must have documented proficiency in teaching in English and Swedish. If the person appointed is not proficient in Swedish at the start of their appointment, they are expected to acquire the necessary language skills during the first two years of employment.
As the Department is striving to achieve a more equal distribution of gender among its teaching staff within the subject area in question, the Department especially invites woman applicants to apply for this position. Where there is an unequal gender balance, the Swedish Defence University can, in the event of equally or nearly equally qualified applicants, choose to accept an applicant of an underrepresented gender.
General requirements for teachers
Civilian and military teachers at the Swedish Defence University must have completed a course in teaching and learning in higher education prior to, or no later than one and a half years after the start of their employment.
The applicant must possess the personal traits necessary to do well in the position.
