The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. We offer a unique academic environment where military and civilian researchers, teachers and students interact. We educate and train top-level executives, experts, and researchers for the task of analyzing and managing current and future crises, security issues and conflicts. The university educates all military officers in the Swedish armed forces and leads the academic progression of the military profession. We conduct research in the areas of Law with a focus on International and Operational Law, Leadership and Command & Control, Military History, Political Science, Systems Science for Defence and Security and War Studies.

The subject of defence systems, which falls within the purview of the Department of Military Science (militärvetenskapliga institutionen, MVI), conducts research and education at the intersection of social sciences and engineering. The subject is interdisciplinary and studies how a combination of social and technical components affect the systems used for the defence and security of society. The subject's employees primarily teach within the Officer Programme, the Master's Programme in Defence and Security Systems Development, and the Senior Officer Programme. They also contribute by provided teaching and expertise in other civilian and military education programmes, including contract education commissioned by both governmental and private parties. Research is either financed by grants or commissioned by contract. The position is located at the Division of Management Science and Defence Systems (avdelningen för ledningsvetenskap och försvarssystem, ALF) at the Swedish Defence University (Försvarshögskolan, FHS) in Stockholm.

Job responsibilities and tasks

The position relates to research of at least 50%, as well as teaching and administration in the area of defence systems. The duties of this position have a particular focus on the cyber domain. This includes areas such as informatics, computer and systems science, information security and the like.

General requirements for teachers

Civilian and military teachers at the Swedish Defence University must have completed a course in teaching and learning in higher education prior to, or no later than one and a half years after the start of their employment.

The applicant must possess the personal traits necessary to do well in the position.

Qualifications

Applicants for the position of associate senior lecturer must have a PhD or possess equivalent scientific competence. In particular, persons should be considered who have obtained a PhD or achieved equivalent competence no more than five years prior to the end of the application period, unless there are special reasons for exemption to this general rule, such as sickness, parental leave or other explanatory circumstances.

If the applicant holds a foreign degree, an assessment will be made on a case-by-case basis to determine if it can be regarded as equivalent to a Swedish degree.

Assessment criteria

The primary assessment criteria for employment as an associate senior lecturer, is the applicant’s degree of expertise in independent research work within the field to which the call for applications relates. In addition, a balance of the following assessment criteria apply:

  • Interdisciplinary research experience.
  • Cyber research experience with a focus on defence, crisis management and security.
  • Experience with cyber research in collaboration with government authorities or industry actors.
  • Documented teaching expertise.

Applicants must have documented proficiency in teaching in English and Swedish. If the person appointed is not proficient in Swedish at the start of their appointment, they are expected to acquire the necessary language skills during the first two years of employment.

The appointment

The position is a full-time appointment lasting four years, with a start date to be agreed upon by the prospective employee and the university. The appointment is a career development position with a focus on the possibility of qualifying for other teaching positions for which there are higher eligibility requirements and which involve permanent employment.
