The Swedish Defence University is an internationally recognized higher education institution in the field of defence, crisis management, and security. The Swedish Defence University trains Sweden’s officers and spearheads the academic development of the officer profession. We conduct research into international law, defence systems, war studies, leadership under stressful conditions, command and control science, military history, political science focusing on security policy and strategy, and political science focusing on crisis management and international cooperation.

The Swedish Defence University is looking for a Professor of War Studies specialising in ground operations and tactics The core interests of war studies are war, warfare, and the exercise of military power. Typical war studies research subjects include the nature of war, the usefulness of military means, the modus operandi of military organisations, and how military abilities are created, led, organised, and utilised in various types of operations (conventional and non-conventional). War studies also encompasses the drivers within military organisations, the development of the officer profession, and the conditions of victory or defeat in battle, campaigns, and wars, as well as issues relating to women, peace, and security.

The position is currently located in the Department of Military Studies at the Swedish Defence University, Stockholm. The department is characterised by an academic environment where research and education intersect and where teachers and researchers collaborate in theory and practice. The department’s subjects include war studies, command and control science, military history, and military technology.

Duties The professorship in war studies specialising in ground operations and tactics is a key position for continuing the academic development of the officer training in the field of war science in cooperation with the Swedish Armed Forces. The goal is to conduct high-quality, praxis-focused research on tactics and ground operations in order to develop the scientific foundation of the officer profession and create world class officer training. The position includes a leadership role in the development of the war studies subject through research, teaching, and supervision at first, second and third-cycle level, alongside the other subject professors. The professor will also work to promote equality at the university. The position also includes handling administrative leadership tasks within the department and the university.

General requirements for teachers Civilian and military teachers at the Swedish Defence University must have completed and passed a course in teaching and learning in higher education prior to, or no later than one and a half years after the start of their employment.

The applicant must have good interpersonal skills and the ability to work within a team environment.

Assessment grounds When appointing a professor, the degree to which applicants have the necessary proficiency for such a position shall form the grounds for the assessment. The assessment of pedagogical proficiency shall be given equal weight to the assessment of scientific proficiency. In addition to scientific and pedagogical proficiency, applicants must have shown leadership proficiency. Qualifications and merits in this field must also be documented in writing and, preferably, include a review.

The following assessment grounds are also included when appointing an applicant to this position:

Scientific proficiency proven through war studies research focusing on the areas of ground operations and tactics, and which have been documented in highly ranked academic publications subject to peer review. Proficiency in planning, carrying out, and evaluating primarily professional training in the field of war studies (or equivalent), at a first and second-cycle level, and documented proficiency in supervising doctoral students. Documented leadership proficiency, especially with regards to building up, leading, and developing high-quality research, especially experience of working with applications for research funding, and ability to coordinate groups, resolving conflicts, and promoting commitment and participation.
