The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. We offer a unique academic environment where military and civilian researchers, teachers and students interact. We educate and train top-level executives, experts, and researchers for the task of analyzing and managing current and future crises, security issues and conflicts. The university educates all military officers in the Swedish armed forces and leads the academic progression of the military profession. We conduct research in the areas of Law with a focus on International and Operational Law, Leadership and Command & Control, Military History, Political Science, Systems Science for Defence and Security and War Studies.
The advertised position is placed at the Strategy Section within the Department of Security, Strategy and Leadership (ISSL). War Studies is the core discipline in Swedish officer’s education and it encompasses the study of war, warfare and use of force. We educate civilian as well as military students at basic, advanced and research level. Our research contributes to both national and international scholarly debates and with this position; we want to strengthen our research on gender, peace and security further.
The advertised position involves teaching and research in War Studies within the area of gender, peace and security. The position includes conducting research, partaking in applying for more research funding as well as further develop a research agenda for issues related to gender, peace and security within War Studies. The position also includes teaching, being an examiner as well as developing courses primarily for, but not exclusive to, issues related to gender, peace and security within War Studies. The position may also involve some administrative tasks.
The eligibility requirements for the position of Associate Senior Lecturer are governed by Section 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance and the SEDU Appointments regulation, Section 6.6. Accordingly, those eligible for appointment are those who have a doctoral degree (PhD), or equivalent scientific competence. Applicants should have obtained their degree no longer than five years prior to the date of the application deadline, unless specific reasons such as illness, parental leave or similar conditions justify otherwise.
Associate Senior Lecturers at SEDU are expected to have fulfilled requirements of courses in higher education learning before appointment or at the latest a year and a half after the employment starts.

Applicants are expected to be able to teach in English and within a two-year period also in Swedish. It is an asset, but not a demand, to have a background as a military officer or other relevant experience from the defence and security sector.

This is a full-time appointment for an initial period of four years. The position entails 50% research during this term. Associate Senior Lecturers may be promoted to a tenured Senior Lectureship upon positive review after this initial period.
